Chris Weidman Questions UFC Not Paying Him ‘Guaranteed Money’

Chris Weidman revealed he won’t be fully compensated after his UFC 309 fight was canceled at the last minute.

Weidman (16-7 MMA, 12-7 UFC) was scheduled to fight Eryk Anders less than two weeks ago at Madison Square Garden in New York, but the fight was canceled the night that Anders became ill and was not allowed to participate.

It was a devastating blow for the former UFC middleweight champion, who flew in friends and family to watch him fight. However, Weidman credits the UFC for trying to find a last-minute replacement.

‘They’re going to take care of me. They do something for me,” Weidman continued “The Ariel Helwani Show.” ‘I don’t get my full wallet. I’ll put that out there, which is hard. You show up, you do everything right, and you don’t get it. … They also said they were trying to find me another opponent that whole day.

“They were looking for 205-pounders who were fighting that day or anyone else in the area trying to pull off one of those Dan Ige-type situations. Apparently the New York Commission had no intention of allowing anything on that kind of short notice. So that kept this from happening.”

Weidman’s fight with Anders (16-8 MMA, 8-8 UFC) has been rescheduled for UFC 310 on December 7 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. While he disagrees that he hasn’t received his full purse since then, Weidman explained why the UFC chose not to pay him in full.

“My show money is my winning money,” Weidman said. “I got money guaranteed, so that was my point. I showed up. You already had that in the budget, you had a great evening. Why do you keep that money and I don’t? That was my thought. Their thoughts were, ‘Listen, this happens on 40 percent of the cards, and if we paid people not to fight’ – they just want to be consistent in what they do in those situations.”
