Ghaziabad: Ghaziabad police on Saturday arrested 18 people for rioting, assault and criminal intimidation, almost a week after a 19-year-old law student was allegedly attacked by a group of people outside a private school over an argument that took place at a freshers’ party on October 19 .

Police have registered a case under sections 191(2) (rioting), 115(2) (assault) and 351(2) (criminal intimidation) of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita against eight identified and ten unidentified suspects, among 20 and 25 years old, at Indirapuram Police Station on Saturday. (Representative image)

Police identified the victim as Om Chaudhary, a resident of Nehru Nagar, Ghaziabad, who was pursuing BA LLB from a private college in Ghaziabad.

In a police complaint filed at the Indirapuram police station on October 22, the victim’s father Vinod Chaudhary stated that on October 19, his son “Om had gone to a freshers’ party and accidentally dropped water on the clothes of another student. The issue escalated and a heated argument took place.”

“The next day, Om was called by the same student for an apology. As requested, Om apologized in front of other students, and it was video recorded. Despite a public apology, two days after the incident on October 22, when Om was returning home with a friend, Om was accosted outside the university gate by a group of 20 to 25 people and brutally assaulted,” read the first information report which was later recorded . based on the complaint.

“After locals intervened, the suspects fled the spot and threatened Om with dire consequences. His condition is said to be stable, said Swatantra Singh, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Indirapuram.
