Cyclists ride one of England’s steepest hills in Ryedale

A group of cyclists climbed one of England’s steepest hills inspired by a Victorian man who was the first to reach the top 102 years ago.

Members of the Ryedale Velo Club spent Sunday morning cycling along the Chimney Bank in Rosedale, which has sections with a gradient of more than 30%.

President Tim Featherstone said the club, which has 150 members, wanted to follow the tire tracks of former postman Edgar Milner, who climbed the hill in 1912 at the age of 17, before any automobile could do so.

Rosedale residents were so impressed with him that they gave him a medal, which is on display at the Ryedale Folk Museum in Hutton-le-Hole.
