The Supreme Court today granted interim bail to Babul Akter, former Superintendent of Police, in a case filed over the murder of his wife Mahmuda Khanam Mitu in 2016.

The court also issued a rule asking the state to explain why Babul Akter should not be granted permanent bail in the case.

The HC judges Md Atoar Rahman and Md Ali Reza granted the bail and issued a rule on a bail application filed by Babul.

Babul’s lawyer Jayed Bin Amjad told The Daily Star that there is no legal bar for his client to be released from jail following the HC order.

The HC granted the bail on the grounds of contradictions in the confessional statements of some other accused in the case.

Moreover, the case was filed by Babul Akter in connection with the incident surrounding the murder of his wife Mitu, but later Babul Akter was accused and arrested in the same case after the Police Bureau of Investigation took over the case, the lawyer added. .

Lawyer Mohammad Shishir Manir made arguments on behalf of Babul during the hearing on the bail application.

Mitu was stabbed and shot dead while taking her son to the school bus stop at GEC intersection in Chattogram City on June 5, 2016. After the incident, Babul filed the case with Panchlaish police station, accusing three unidentified men.

Later, the case was taken over by PBI from the Chattogram Metropolitan Police’s Criminal Investigation Department.

On May 12, 2021, Mitu’s father filed a murder case against eight people, claiming that Babul was the mastermind behind this murder. Mitu’s father also claimed that he killed his wife over an extramarital affair and was made the prime suspect in the case.
