A woman was seriously injured after she was allegedly sexually assaulted and assaulted by a man.

The woman, in her 50s, suffered serious facial injuries following the incident in the Lecky Road area of ​​Londonderry in the early hours of Sunday.

On Sunday evening, police said a man in his 30s had been arrested on suspicion of related offences, adding that he was in police custody at the time.

Previously, the police spokesperson said they believe the attack happened around 1:15 am.

“The woman, in her 50s, was approached by an unknown man who pulled her into a nearby alley where he sexually assaulted her, including repeatedly punching her in the face and slamming her head against a wall,” they said.

‘She suffered serious facial injuries and other injuries as a result of this terrifying ordeal from which she was only able to escape after her attacker released her.

‘The woman was then able to raise the alarm for help and the suspect fled on foot.

‘She required hospital treatment for her injuries and is understandably extremely saddened and shocked by what happened. Specialist officers will continue to support her.”

They added: ‘We are appealing to anyone who may have been in the Lecky Road area between 1.15am and 1.35am this morning and witnessed what happened or noticed anything suspicious to contact police at 101, quoting reference number 323 27/10/ 24.’
