The Calgary Police Service has issued an alert announcing the release of a sex offender who police say is at high risk of reoffending.

According to a news release, 39-year-old John Macindoe was released into the community on Tuesday after serving two-thirds of a prison sentence. prison sentence of six years and seven months.

He served a prison sentence for burglary with intent to commit an assault, burglary with intent to commit an assault, burglary with intent to commit an indictable offense and possession of burglary tools.

Macindoe committed the crimes between 2014 and 2019 in Calgary after knowing his victims.

In one incident, Macindoe admitted to breaking into a woman’s apartment on April 1, 2019, with the intent to rape her.

He found his victim asleep on her couch, and as he walked through the apartment, she used her smartwatch to contact her boyfriend, who called the police.

A ‘rape kit’ was found on Macindoe, including zip ties, a large buck knife and bondage straps for her hands and feet.

Surveillance video from the woman’s apartment complex showed that Macindoe had previously broken into the building nine times in the past month, and a search of his home uncovered two of her panties and a head of hair that matched the length and color of hers the victim.

DNA retrieved from that incident Macindoe linked to a 2014 sexual assault in Calgary.

In June 2014, the victim woke up around 4:05 a.m. to see a man standing over her in her bedroom.

The victim screamed and the man covered her mouth with one hand and groped her breast over her shirt with his other hand. The man pulled down the duvet cover and straddled the victim in bed. The victim was able to kick him in the torso, causing him to fall backwards. She ran to another room and contacted the police.

Police seized a bottle of lube found on the victim’s bedroom floor and tested it for DNA. In 2020, the DNA was linked to Macindoe.

“The Calgary Police Service is issuing this warning after careful consideration and consideration of related issues, including privacy concerns, in the belief that it is clearly in the public interest to inform community members of Macindoe’s release,” CPS wrote in the press release.

Macindoe is described as 6 feet tall, with brown eyes and brown hair.

He will be subject to statutory release conditions and will be supervised by the Correctional Service of Canada, followed by probation. He will also be put through the CPS High-Risk Offender Program.

CPS asks members of the public not to engage in any form of vigilante activity.
