Poll worker assaulted at early voting center in Bexar County, elections administrator says

SAN ANTONIO – According to Bexar County Elections Administrator Jacque Callanen, an elections clerk was assaulted during an incident at a polling place.

Election officials confirmed the attack occurred at the Johnston Branch Library at 6307 Sun Valley Drive, one of 51 polling places open during the early voting period in Bexar County.

Details about what led to the attack were not released by Callanen during a press conference Friday morning. She said the investigation is ongoing.

The attack occurred Thursday evening and the clerk was treated at the scene by emergency medical services before the clerk was released, Callanen said.

On Thursday, 896 ballots were cast. Callanen said the polling place will be open for early voting on Friday.

Early voting began Monday and so far 191,362 votes have been cast in Bexar County. figures from the Bexar County Elections Office.

On Thursday, the fourth day of early voting, polling places in Bexar County had the highest number of votes cast yet: 48,653 votes cast.

Callanen said “our polling sites are safe” and asked people to be patient and prepared.

During a press conference on ThursdayCallanen reminded voters that they should not wear campaign paraphernalia, such as a shirt, hat, button or swag, to the voting booth.

She said some election judges will bring jackets to polling places for voters to wear in case people wear a shirt with a particular candidate’s image. Callanen said some voters will be asked to go to the restroom and turn their shirt inside out or even tape a sample ballot to the front of their shirt.

“You may see voters who are not happy… but we have to stay within the law so that no one is intimidated and everyone can come and vote freely,” Callanen said.

She also said voters cannot discuss political preferences while lining up to vote.

Registered voters in Bexar County can vote at any polling place during the early voting period and Election Day. Early voting ends on November 1and it’s election day November 5.
