“You slept with my wife!” Court documents detail the history and battle between the Houston brothers that led to someone’s death

CALHOUN COUNTY, IA – Court documents provide more details about what happened the night of a man’s death and the violent history between the murder suspect – who is also his brother.

Kyle Andrew Coolack, 39, has been charged with murder in connection with the death of his brother, Brad Henry Coolack, 35, who was found dead in March 2022. Brad Coolack was shot multiple times in an apartment in the 7200 block of West. Groenenweg.

What happened

Kyle initially called 911 to report a man had been shot multiple times in the leg and identified himself as “Coolack,” records say.

He reportedly told the operator that no CPR was in progress because the patient was dead, then hung up.

When officers arrived, they found Brad’s body on the bedroom floor of the apartment, with multiple gunshot wounds to the torso, records show. A dog was also found and appeared to have been grazed by two bullets.

There was reportedly a tourniquet on Brad’s left leg and three fired 9mm shell casings on the bedroom floor. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

During the investigation, detectives spoke with the victim’s ex-girlfriend, who then informed them about Brad’s brother, Kyle. She told detectives that Kyle regularly stayed at his brother’s apartment. She also said there was an incident in 2021 where Kyle allegedly pistol-whipped his brother.

Investigators also spoke with Brad and Kyle’s mother, who told detectives that Kyle owns a firearm and believes he is likely responsible for his brother’s death.

Houston police said witnesses in the area said they heard two people arguing and then multiple gunshots.

During the argument, the witness told investigators they heard one of the men yell at the other man, “You slept with my wife!” and immediately several gunshots. When investigators spoke to Brad’s ex-wife, she admitted to the affair with Kyle while Brad was deployed overseas.

Kyle Coolack was initially identified as a person of interest in this incident and murder charges were filed on July 15, 2022.

After two years on the run, Coolack was found in Calhoun County, Iowa.

Murder suspect caught after admitting to his brother’s murder

The Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office said they received a call Saturday from a man who said he had just evicted another man from his home. The man recently stayed in the home. Authorities were told in an interview that the man, identified as Coolack, admitted he was fleeing the murder of his own brother, which led to the resident kicking Coolack out of the home.

A Calhoun County sheriff’s deputy located Coolack outside the town of Pomeroy while walking south along a highway. He was detained and interrogated.

After initially giving deputies a false name, Coolack revealed his real name to deputies. Upon checking the records, officers were able to find the outstanding murder warrant for which Coolack was wanted.

Coolack was arrested and taken to the Carroll County Jail pending extradition to Houston.
