Kim Kardashian celebrates the Menendez brothers after prosecutors ask for recidivism

Kim Kardashian praised Los Angeles District Attorney George Gascón for “righting a significant injustice” by requesting that the Menendez brothers are resented for the murder of their parents in 1989.

“Your commitment to honesty and truth is commendable,” the “Kardashians” star, 44, wrote in a message to Gascón, 70, via her Instagram Story Thursday.

Kardashian then addressed the many friends, family members and supporters of Lyle Menendez and Erik Menendez – who, like her, fight for their freedom – saying, “Your voices have been heard.”

The actress, who stars in Ryan Murphy’s upcoming legal drama “All’s Fair,” also took a moment to credit the TV producer for “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story.”

She said the hit Neflix show had “exposed the abuse and injustice in the brothers’ cases”.

Kardashian, one mother of foursaid she believed that “society’s understanding of child abuse has evolved and social media allows us to question the systems in place.”

In their 1993 trial, Erik and Lyle gave emotional testimony on the stand, alleging that their late father, José Menendez, had sexually abused them throughout their lives.

They claimed that their mother, Kitty Menendez, knew about the alleged abuse but did not intervene.

The first murder trial resulted in a hung jury, as the jurors were divided on how to convict the brothers.

A retrial followed in 1995, but much of the sexual abuse evidence was excluded at the time, resulting in the murder convictions and life sentences without the possibility of parole.

Since then, new information that appears to confirm that Erik and Lyle were abused as children has created a high demand for a recidivism.

A key piece of evidence was a note Erik wrote to his now deceased cousin Andy Cano months before the murders, which read: “I’ve been trying to avoid Dad. It still happens Andy, but it’s worse for me now.

Roy Rosselló, a former member of the boy band Menudo that José oversaw, has also come forward with claims that the entertainment manager sexually assaulted him when he was 14 years old.

Kardashian added in her statement: “This case highlights the importance of challenging decisions and seeking the truth, even when there is no guilt.”

“I believe in the ability of the legal system to evolve, and I am grateful for a society where we can challenge decisions and seek justice,” the reality star said. fighting for prison reform continued for years.

She concluded, “Never stop asking questions.”

The brothers testified that their father sexually abused them for years and that their mother did nothing to intervene.

Last week, Kardashian explained to Variety why she is so passionate about the brothers’ cases after watching “Monsters” and it showing her “so much about abuse.”

“Imagine if no one believed you. … They’ve been at it for almost 35 years. That is more than a charge of first-degree murder,” she said on October 19 during the Academy Museum Gala.

“I am someone who believes in second chances and I really believe in them.”

Kardashian had also met the brothers in person during a prison visit with “Monsters” star Cooper Koch, who played Erik on Murphy’s series.

Gascón said during a news conference that Lyle, 56, and Erik, 53, have been on “a journey of redemption and rehabilitation” and have “paid their debt to society.”

However, the prosecutor noted that it was not an easy decision to seek a renewed sentence because the people in his office were divided, with some not believing that the brothers had been abused and others believing that they had been abused and ‘ should be released immediately’. .”

“There is no excuse for murder, and I will never suggest that what we are doing here is to excuse their behavior – because even if you are being abused, the right thing to do is to call the police and get help,” Gascón said .

The final decision is still up to a judge, who will determine whether the new sentences for the Menendez brothers would change to 50 years to life – 25 years for each murder.

However, because they were convicted when they were under 26 years old, they could be categorized as “juvenile offenders” under California law, meaning they would immediately be unavailable for parole.
