If you’re looking for a scenic hike with breathtaking views and a touch of history, the Putnam River Trail should be your next adventure. This urban trail perfectly combines nature and small-town charm, making it ideal for a quick day trip or a relaxing weekend getaway.

The Putnam River Trail winds along the eastern side of the Quinebaug River, treating you to breathtaking views of the water, Cargill Falls, and the surrounding landscape. This mostly paved three-mile out-and-back trail is a favorite for hikers, cyclists and families. Don’t be fooled by the “easy” rating; There is plenty to see and do along the way.

One of the highlights? The charming bridges that cross the river. Each of the three bridges has its own unique character and offers picturesque viewpoints. Don’t miss the 60-meter-long pedestrian bridge, built on the foundation of an old railway trestle. Just imagine the history these stones have gone through!

As you stroll the trail, be sure to check out the historical exhibits scattered along the route. They offer a fascinating glimpse into Putnam’s past, from the railroad days and textile mills to the people who shaped its identity. There is even an exhibition on the 1955 flood – a reminder of the power of nature and the resilience of community.

The Putnam River Trail is always open and ready for you. The main visiting season is from March to November, but I’m curious to see what it’s like in winter; maybe a snowy walk is in my future? There is plenty of parking along Kennedy Drive, and porta-potties are located near some parking lots. After your walking tour, explore the town of Putnam and discover the Putnam Public Library, catch a show at the Bradley Playhouse, or look for unique finds in the Antique marketplace.
