89-year-old woman and 90-year-old husband dead after murder-suicide at Manatawny Manor nursing home in Chester County

EAST COVENTRY TWP., Pa. (WPVI) — Authorities in Chester County say a 90-year-old man fatally shot his 89-year-old wife in her nursing home room and then turned the gun on himself.

The shooting happened around 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Manatawny Manor Nursing Home in East Coventry Township.

The man was taken to Reading Hospital with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head and died overnight, the Chester County District Attorney’s Office said Friday.

Authorities said another patient was in the room when the shots rang out, but there were no reports of other physical injuries.

The weapon was recovered at the scene.

Shawn Johnson, an employee at the nursing home, said he had the day off but went to the facility to check on patients and staff.

“It’s crazy. I was shocked when I heard about it,” Johnson said.

Pat Erb says her father lives at the facility and was in his room when the shooting happened.

“He said he just heard some commotion and they closed the door to his room,” Erb said.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call Chester County detectives at 610-344-6866.
