FEMA Disaster Recovery Centers are open for one-on-one assistance

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) – FEMA is deployed to nine locations across the state to help families recover after Hurricanes Debby and Helene.

“We are here as long as we see a need,” said Debra Young, spokesperson for FEMA. “With our disaster recovery centers, they will remain open as long as people are still coming in.”

At each of the disaster recovery centers, families can receive one-on-one assistance from FEMA staff who will point them to the appropriate resources they need. They provide money for property loss or damage, including food loss for some who have experienced a power outage.

“Some people say they got help for that, while their neighbor didn’t get help for it, so it really depends on your individual application and how you answer the questions in the application,” Young says.

Debra Young with FEMA said they spent more than $187 million to help with both storms in Georgia. She said there is no timeline for application processing time, but you should call or visit one of their centers if you have any concerns.

“If you feel like you haven’t heard from us yet, please reach out anytime,” Young says.

Young said the most common mistake on an application is not providing enough information, such as your insurance or documentation of the damage.

There are now Disaster Survivor Assistants knocking on doors to help people. Young said if you see one, always ask for a badge to avoid scammers.

There are disaster recovery centers in Chatham, Liberty, Toombs, Appling and Hampton counties. You can find your nearest center at FEMA website.
