Simone Biles defends husband Jonathan Owens against backlash over viral ‘catch’ comments

Simone Biles tries to clean up after her husband Jonathan Owenscontroversial comments from his 2023 interview about The twist podcast.

The 11 times Olympic gold medalist addressed the criticism that followed her partner following his comments last year on a recent episode of hers Netflix documentary, Simone Biles stands up.

When Owens joined hosts Ryan Clark, Channing Crowder and Fred Taylor The twisthe was asked who he thought was the “catch” in his relationship with Biles. “I always say the men are the catch,” he replied before Crowder wondered how that could be N.F.L star “pulled” her.

“Man, that’s really how she pulled me, man. That is the question,” Owens said.

The Chicago Bears player sent the internet into a spiral over his comments, which were perceived by many as sexist and condescending.

However, op Simone Biles stands up, the gymnast is seen laughing in response to Owens’ comments.

“Social media gives (followers) this false sense of reality that they really know who you are and how you function,” Biles said on the Oct. 25 episode. “They usually don’t understand the mental toll that takes, especially when they’re entering an Olympic year.

“I know we signed up to be judged at the gym, but if you guys start talking about him or my family, then yes, I’m coming to you,” she continued. “I usually bite my tongue, but now I have a voice, I’ve always had a voice. Just because you thought I wouldn’t see it doesn’t mean I’m not obligated to respond. It’s crazy.”

Biles and Owens married in April 2023 after meeting in March 2020. Since the two started dating, they have built a house together in Houston, Texas. For Biles, their love is more meaningful than “the number of trophies, medals and awards” she has.

“That’s not how you measure love,” Biles noted.

Amid all the criticism last year, the happy couple proved they were above the negativity. On Instagram, Owens wrote: “Undisturbed. Just know that we have locked ourselves in here.” Meanwhile, Biles claimed she and Owens were “for life.”

He further brushed off the backlash in a June 2024 interview with American weekly.

“I turned off all my social media notifications, so I didn’t even know for a while,” Owens told the outlet.

“I was actually with my mom and Simone when it came out, so all the comments and stuff, I just let them read it. I try to stay away from it, and if you feel like things are getting out of hand, then of course you should say something.

“I don’t mean to cuss, but damned if you do, damned if you don’t,” he further told the outlet. “If you say something, they will say something too; if you don’t say anything, they’re going to say something.

“So just live your life. People are going to talk about you anyway, so you might as well do it the way you want,” he added.
