Justin Faiferlick hopes to maintain a top-notch fitness and recovery center in the Fort Dodge area.

The martial arts guru has run Faiferlick Martial Arts for more than 40 years and, since 2020, the neighboring Next Edge Performance Gym at its current location on South 25th Street. It offers the best of many features that are usually only available in larger locations.

“My wife and I wanted to bring a place to Fort Dodge that offered the amenities of cryotherapy, red light therapy, fitness pod, sauna, sensory deprivation room with a zero-body float and an oxygen bar,” he said. “When this location first opened, we were just a small business in the La James Building, across Fifth Avenue South.”

“We were all ready to go at the beginning of 2020, but then COVID hit,” he added. “We used that time to train some employees so they were ready to go when we were able to open. It was a rough start at first, but once we got this new place, things started to go well.”

So much so that the clientele peaked in the mid-200s – a strong addition to the martial arts studio.

“The idea from the start was to connect both places,” Faiferlick said. “I didn’t want one in one place and one in another. These two companies really complement each other.”

The only situation that doesn’t fit into this equation is the tough medical battle Faiferlick faces. He was diagnosed with terminal cancer after some tests found a tumor in his brain. “My family and I take time every day and enjoy doing it,” he said. “Some lesions are still growing, but overall my cancer is stable. I can live in a stable condition forever and plan to fight every day. I am following treatment, but nothing more can be done. “

“My family and friends are what matters right now, along with leaving a legacy of grace, including big family dinners on Sundays,” the former Air National Guard lieutenant colonel and still martial arts grandmaster said about time together.

“We want to take some of the stress and tasks off our hands, so we decided to sell Next Edge Performance,” he added. “I still believe that this type of gym can now flourish in Fort Dodge. We know there is a good match for someone out there.”
