Helena police officer helps prevent child deaths in Alabama

SHELBY COUNTY, Ala. (WBRC) – A Helena police officer joins a statewide team trying to identify trends that are putting our children at risk.

Governor Kay Ivey appointed Sgt. Adam Sample for the state Infant Mortality Commission. This review board is part of the state’s infant mortality system through the public health department.

With a background in crime scene investigation, Sgt. Sample follows in his father’s footsteps by joining this team.

Sergeant Sample helps review cases of child deaths and determine how to prevent them from happening to other children.

This team meets quarterly to review a variety of infant mortality cases, including sudden infant death syndrome. Their goal is to dig deeper into what happened and the factors that led to the death in order to create a prevention plan.

“The main mission for the team is to find ways to do better prevention so that we can communicate it to the governor and legislators so that we have ways to prevent things through legislation and education,” said Sgt. Monster said.

Several laws and programs, such as the Graduated Licensing Act, have evolved from these types of teams, which is why Sgt. Sample says they are crucial to keeping children safe.
