Elderly man kills wife and himself in Pa. nursing home, says DA

A 90-year-old man died from his injuries after killing his 89-year-old wife and then shooting himself at a Chester County nursing home, officials said.

The shooting occurred on Thursday, October 24, at the Manatawny Manor Nursing Home in East Coventry Township, Pennsylvania. An 89-year-old patient was in her room at the nursing home when a 90-year-old man, later identified as her husband, walked in, pulled a gun and shot her, investigators said.

According to investigators, the man then shot himself in the head. He was taken to Reading Hospital, where he died overnight and the incident was ruled a murder-suicide, the Chester County District Attorney’s Office announced Friday.

Prosecutor Christopher Barrena-Sarobe said there was another patient in the room where the shooting occurred, but that person was not physically harmed during the incident.

Investigators said the murder weapon was recovered at the scene and there is currently no threat to the public or anyone else at the nursing home.
