New Netflix Western Show in Top 10 is accused of ‘copying’ Yellowstone

Netflix’s new Western series, Territory, is climbing the streaming charts this week, but fans of Yellowstone have noticed more than a few similarities.

That’s not surprising Territory should climb the streaming service’s rankings. With a few weeks to go until Yellowstone Season 5 Part 2 appears on the screens, cowboy fans have been eagerly looking for.

Enter: territory. Set in the brutal Australian outback, the show follows the inner politics and struggles of a family that owns the largest cattle station in the world. Focused on the struggle for legacy and inheritance, it is indeed a spiritual sibling Taylor Sheridan‘s drama.

Released on October 24, the new TV program currently sits at number four on Netflix’s Top 10 Shows. This, combined with the Rotten Tomatoes score of 71%, proves that Territory is a popular replacement.

But some viewers just can’t shake the similarities, even with one Reddit user to ask: “Has anyone else looked at Australian Yellowstone?”

One comment commented: “I laughed at the ad. I’m sure it’s absolutely terrible, like most Aussie TV (speaking as Aussie). Major ‘you can copy my homework, but don’t make it obvious’ vibe. It’s almost painted over the top of Yellowstone.”

“I thought I was the only one who thought this,” wrote another. “Just started watching so I’ve only seen two episodes. Crazy. Sheridan got away with copying a few westerns because nothing is original. Crazy that no one called it out.”

“I started watching the first episode and didn’t make it to the end. Didn’t like it, felt like Walmart’s version of Yellowstone,” one user added.

Even critics are quick to point out the blurred boundaries between the shows with TV Guide to write: “Territory borrows so much from Taylor Sheridan’s neo-Western megahit that it’s almost a tribute. If it were to take any longer, it could be copyright infringement.”

Territory is available to stream on Netflix now. For more information, check out our guides for 6666, The MadisonAnd 1923 Season 2. You can also take a look everywhere Yellowstone cameo in Horion: An American Saga.
