A fatal car crash caused two wildfires that closed Route 44

NORFOLK, CT (WFSB) – A serious car crash Friday evening resulted in a fatality and led to the closure of Route 44.

The crash caused downed power lines, sparking two bushfires on either side of the road in the area of ​​Greenwoods West Road.

According to Norfolk Public Information Officer Jon Barbagallo, 5 acres have burned so far. The fire is now under control.

Police have not identified anyone involved.

Route 44, an east-west corridor in the northwest corner of the state, remains closed as Eversource works to restore power.

The Connecticut Department of Transportation has implemented detours to assist motorists in the area.

Earlier Friday, Governor Lamont declared a state of emergency due to critical fire conditions in Connecticut.
