The school strike in Berwick ends as a compromise between the union and the municipality

NASUWT officials previously said plans to close secondary schools in Glendale, Tweedmouth and Berwick by 2026 would put 142 staff at risk, with only 50 to 60 jobs available after the restructuring.

This measure led to disruptive strikes earlier this month.

Councilor Guy Renner Thompson of Northumberland County Council welcomed the call off of the strikes.

He said: “Parents in Berwick and across North Northumberland will be relieved.

“It has always been our goal to ensure that as many staff as possible are employed, and we have two years to achieve that goal.”

The reorganization comes ahead of a £50 million investment in the partnership, including new buildings for Berwick Academy.
