Labor MP turns himself in to police after altercation with his constituent

A Labor MP has reported himself to police after an alleged assault.

Mike Amesbury, MP for Runcorn and Helsby, was filmed early on Saturday morning when he was apparently confronted by a man lying on the pavement in Frodsham, Cheshire.

In the video, which was circulated on social media, Mr Amesbury appeared to say to the man: “You’ll never threaten me again, will you?”

The video did not capture the alleged attack or the circumstances leading up to it.

In a statement, Mr Amesbury said: “Last night I was involved in an incident which occurred after I felt threatened in the street after a night out with friends.

“This morning I personally contacted Cheshire Police to report what happened during this incident.

“I will make no further public comment but will of course co-operate with any investigations if required by Cheshire Police.

“I remain fully committed to working hard for the people of Runcorn and Helsby, and am determined to remain an open and accessible MP for our community.”

“You’ll never threaten the MP again, will you?”

A spokesperson for Cheshire Constabulary confirmed the incident had been reported.

One witness told the MP: “Leave it,” before another witness said: “The blobs MP—–.”

Another onlooker then said: “He’s the local MP,” to which Mr Amesbury replied: “Yes, I am. And you will never threaten me again.”

He added: “Come and threaten the MP, you’ll never do it again, will you? You’ll never threaten the MP again, will you? You soft damn boy.”

Mr Amesbury was first elected in 2017 and previously served in the shadow cabinets of Jeremy Corbyn and Sir Keir Starmer.

When Labor won the general election in July, he was denied a ministerial role.

The Cheshire Constabulary spokesman said: “At 2.48am on Saturday October 26, police were called to reports of an attack in Frodsham.

“A caller reported being assaulted by a man on Main Street. Investigations are ongoing.”

A Labor Party spokesperson said: “We are aware of an incident that occurred last night. We understand that Mike Amesbury MP has approached Cheshire Police to self-report what happened this morning and that he will co-operate with any investigations they may have.

Labor did not suspend Mr Amesbury over the incident.

Mr Amesbury was contacted for comment.
