Labor MP Mike Amesbury says he was involved in Cheshire ‘incident’ that left him ‘feeling threatened’ | British news

A Labor MP has said he was involved in an incident where he “felt threatened” and was cooperating with police.

Mike Amesbury, MP for Runcorn and Helsby, said he felt “threatened on the streets after a night out with friends” in Cheshire on Friday evening.

“This morning I personally contacted Cheshire Police to report what happened during this incident,” he added.

“I will make no further public comment but will of course co-operate with any investigations if required by Cheshire Police.

“I remain fully committed to working hard for the people of Runcorn and Helsby, and am determined to remain an open and accessible MP for our community.”

Video of the incident appears to show Mr Amesbury looking over a man lying on the ground in Frodsham.

The MP tells the man “you will never threaten me again”, pointing at him, before saying: “Yes, I am (the MP), yes I am, and you will never threaten the MP again, right?

Cheshire Police said officers were called at 2.48am to reports of an attack in Frodsham.

“A caller reported being assaulted by a man on Main Street. The investigation is still ongoing.’

The Labor Party added that it is aware of the incident and said Mr Amesbury “will co-operate with any investigations” the police may have.
