Army report on incident at Trump Arlington Cemetery released, but almost completely redacted

The long-awaited report from the US military on Donald Trump‘is controversial visit Arlington National Cemetery was released in August, but the report sheds little light on what actually happened that day.

The report was released Friday with heavy redactions in response to a court order after American Oversight, a government transparency group, filed a lawsuit. The Army’s report provides little information about the altercation between a cemetery official and Trump campaign staffers that had not yet been made public.

Citing a “simple attack,” the report says:

While working at Arlington National Cemetery, (redacted) using both (redacted) hands while attempting to pass (redacted) did not require on-site medical attention and later refused when offered. (Confidential) made an affidavit on a DA Form 2823 stating (Confidential) that he did not wish to file charges. The investigation continues by the JBMHH PD Investigations Branch

The rest of the report, which includes an affidavit from one of those involved, has been blacked out.

The Trump campaign did not immediately respond to NBC News’ statements request for comment on the report. The military told Politico in a statement: “The law enforcement investigation into the incident remains open and we are therefore unable to provide any further information at this time.”

At the end of August, Trump took part in a wreath-laying ceremony at the military cemetery at the invitation of several Gold Star families. NPR first reported it that an altercation had occurred when a cemetery employee tried to prevent the Trump campaign from filming and photographing the Republican candidate visiting the graves of troops killed in Afghanistan in 2021. Federal law prohibits political campaigning or election-related activities within military cemeteries.

The cemetery worker reported the incident to the military police, but declined to report it to the military said after the incident and added that she considered the matter closed.

News of the incident began a response to Trumpwho has a history of denigrating military personnel and who recently had to deny reports that he praised Adolf Hitler while you are in the office. However, his campaign spokesperson said claimed there had been no physical altercation and said the campaign was “willing to release images if such defamatory claims are made.” (No footage has been released so far.) Also in response: Trump criticized cemetery staff and portrayed himself as the victim of a smear campaign.
