39-year-old charged after house fire claims life of 65-year-old woman

ST MARY, Jamaica – A 39-year-old construction worker has been charged in connection with a house fire that killed a 65-year-old woman on September 3 in Richmond, St Mary.

The suspect is Omar Malcolm from the Lewisburg district, St Mary.

The deceased has been identified as Desrine Malcolm of Cane Heap, Richmond.

According to reports from Richmond Police, residents saw the house on fire around 9:30 am and raised the alarm. The fire brigade was called in to extinguish the fire. After cooling operations, the charred remains of the elderly woman were discovered among the rubble.

The scene was processed and the body was taken to the mortuary for post-mortem.

On Monday, October 14, 2024, Malcolm was arrested and taken into custody. He was subsequently charged on Wednesday, October 23, after a question and answer session in the presence of his lawyer.

His court hearing is wrapping up.
