Chris Brown is under renewed scrutiny over allegations of drugging and raping women at Diddy’s Yacht Party

Chris Brown is once again under public attention as sexual assault allegations resurface, this time in a new documentary airing on Investigation Discovery. The documentary, Chris Brown: A History of Violencerepeats claims that the R&B singer drugged and raped a woman at a party hosted by Sean “Diddy” Combs in 2020. The allegations, first made public in a 2022 lawsuit, have returned to the spotlight amid growing criticism of Brown’s troubled history with women.

The plaintiff, identified only as Jane Doe, first came forward in a lawsuit two years ago seeking $20 million in damages. She alleged that Brown assaulted her during a party aboard Diddy’s yacht in Miami. According to Doe, she had recently moved to Los Angeles to pursue a dancing career when she was invited to the yacht party in December 2020. Initially seeing it as a networking opportunity, she shared that she was excited when she realized Brown was in attendance .

Doe claims that after a brief conversation with Brown, he handed her a drink. “I don’t remember if I saw him pour it,” she said, remembering how her memory began to fade after she drank the drink. “My body felt heavy and I started to feel tired.” According to Doe, Brown then led her to a bedroom, where she was unable to move. “I said ‘No,’ but I couldn’t move,” she claims, adding that the next thing she knew, Brown was attacking her.

During the incident, Doe claims Brown took her phone without permission and texted herself from there — a disturbing detail, she said, made her feel even further violated. “Most girls, I think, would be happy… I didn’t want that. This is not what I wanted,” she told the documentary makers.

After the alleged attack, Doe said it took therapy to fully come to terms with what happened. In the documentary, she says she initially struggled to classify the incident as sexual assault, but is now confident it was. The lawsuit was ultimately dismissed by a judge in 2022 for “lack of prosecution.” Despite this, one of Doe’s attorneys, Ariel Mitchell-Kidd, stands by her client’s claims, saying, “I believe what happened to her is 100% true.”

The case is one of many troubling allegations surrounding Brown, who has a history of violence dating back more than a decade. The documentary coincides with Domestic Violence Awareness Month and delves deep into Brown’s disturbing pattern of alleged abuse towards women. In addition to Doe’s claims, Chris Brown: A History of Violence revisits his infamous 2009 attack on then-girlfriend Rihanna, which shocked the world and left her with visible injuries.

The documentary paints a broader picture of Brown’s violent tendencies and highlights incidents in which he was accused of physical, emotional and verbal abuse of multiple women. These allegations, along with lawsuits and police reports, have created a disturbing narrative around Brown, raising questions about why he has managed to avoid serious legal consequences.

Brown has consistently denied the allegations against him. Shortly after the lawsuit regarding Doe’s claims was filed, Brown took to social media and suggested that the allegations were an attempt to derail his career. “Every time I release music or projects, ‘THEY’ try to pull real bullshit,” he wrote in an Instagram post, indirectly addressing the claims.

The documentary also examines the protective culture surrounding Brown and other powerful men in the entertainment industry. Commentators in the film, including LAPD Sergeant Cheryl Dorsey and culture writer Scaachi Koul, discuss how Brown has maintained a loyal fan base despite the serious allegations against him. His influence in the music world and the support of fans have allowed him to avoid the consequences that could have ended the career of another artist.

Despite the dismissal of Doe’s lawsuit, attorney Mitchell-Kidd continues to argue that the case was mishandled. In the documentary she expresses her regret that she was not able to put her client at ease enough at the time to fully share her story. However, she remains adamant that Brown is guilty of the allegations, a sentiment shared by other women who have spoken out against him.

In addition to the legal battle, the documentary highlights the broader issue of domestic violence and the way abuse survivors are often discredited or ignored. As Katie Ray-Jones, CEO of the National Domestic Violence Hotline, notes in the film’s discussions, many victims feel powerless to seek justice, especially when the suspect is a well-known public figure with enormous resources and influence.

Chris Brown’s representatives have consistently denied all allegations of sexual misconduct, calling them “malicious and false.” Yet, as the documentary highlights, Brown has been a central figure in countless cases of violence and abuse over the years. These repeated accusations suggest a pattern of behavior that, despite his celebrity status, remains deeply disturbing.

The release of Chris Brown: A History of Violence is expected to reignite discussions about Brown’s legacy and the responsibility of powerful figures in the entertainment industry. The documentary is a clear reminder that fame and fortune should not protect individuals from the consequences of their actions, especially when it comes to violence and abuse.
