Man arrested for multiple thefts and burglaries in Thomaston

THOMASTON – A 55-year-old transient man was arrested Wednesday on multiple charges, including theft, burglary and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, Thomaston police said.

David Atwood was taken into custody at a McDonald’s restaurant after allegedly stealing a car from the Lowe’s parking lot on New County Road earlier in the day.

Police said Atwood is also suspected of breaking into an Enterprise car rental location and stealing a golf cart from the property.

Witnesses reported seeing Atwood return the stolen vehicle to the Lowe’s parking lot and flee on foot.

The owner of the vehicle reported significant damage and missing cash upon return.

Atwood faces three charges of theft, one charge of unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, one charge of criminal mischief and one charge of burglary.

Investigators with the Office of the State Fire Marshal interviewed Atwood as a person of interest in recent suspicious fires in the area.

That investigation remains active.

Atwood is being held in the Knox County Jail.

Police are reminding residents to remove keys and lock vehicles if they leave them unattended.
