Barge stuck in the Fraser River near Langley, BC

Work crews were called to a problem with a vessel that appeared to be stuck on the bank of the Fraser River in Langley Saturday morning.

Images from the scene shared with CTV News show the ship tilting to one side near Two Bit Bar in Glen Valley Regional Park, just west of Crescent Island.

Water also appeared to be pumped from the distressed ship.

A second ship was pulled alongside the first and a crane could be seen moving the load of sand or gravel from one ship to the other.

Both ships have the “Ledcor Group” brand on the side. CTV News has reached out to the company asking for more information about what happened. This story will be updated if a response is received.

The Canadian Coast Guard told CTV News that the location is outside the “vessel traffic zone” and that there have been no reports of anyone calling for help with a drifting or grounded vessel.

A local fisherman told CTV News he was in the area Friday evening and saw the apparently stranded ship. He said it appeared the ship was stuck “pretty well” and would remain there for a while.

The two ships were quite close to shore and did not appear to have any impact on navigation in the river.

The fisherman who spoke to CTV News said he hoped the distressed vessel would not suffer the same fate as the one that washed up in Vancouver’s English Bay during the 2021 atmospheric river that caused flooding and landslides in the province.

That ship remained stranded near Sunset Beach for about a year and quickly became a popular destination for selfie-takers and the site of at least one marriage proposal.

Merchandise was made and sold, including T-shirts and a Lego set. However, people living in the area also complained that it was an eyesore and that it took far too long to be removed.

The English Bay ship was eventually cut up and taken away. with work completed by the end of 2022.
