Police say the occupants escaped with only minor injuries after a two-vehicle crash in Gurnee on Friday morning caused heavy damage, splitting a car in half.

The Gurnee Fire Department and Gurnee Police Department responded to the intersection of Washington Street and Route 21 around 7:34 a.m. Friday for a report of a vehicle crash with injuries.

Gurnee Police Department Public Information Officer Shawn Gaylor said two cars, a beige 2004 Honda sedan and a blue 2021 Kia sedan, were involved in the crash.

A preliminary investigation revealed the Honda was traveling westbound on Washington Street in the left turn lane.

The Honda was attempting to turn south onto Route 21, Gaylor said.

The Honda began to enter the intersection and turned in front of the Kia, resulting in a collision.

Heavy damage was reported and fire officials said the Honda broke in half during the crash.

The driver of the Honda, a 56-year-old Mundelein man, suffered minor injuries.

Gaylor said he was transported by ambulance to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville for treatment.

The driver of the Kia, a 25-year-old Waukegan man, also suffered minor injuries but refused transport to the hospital.

The crash disrupted traffic for about 30 minutes as crews cleared the area and moved cars from the roadway, Gaylor said.

No charges have been filed yet as officers are still investigating the crash.
