Woman and two-month-old baby killed in accident; 3 other children to the hospital

PHOENIX (KPHO/Gray News) – A woman and a baby were killed in a crash at a major intersection in Phoenix Friday afternoon.

On Saturday, authorities identified the woman as 25-year-old Kristina Lara and the 2-month-old as Josiah Lara.

Phoenix police said the collision happened at 19th Avenue and Lower Buckeye Road shortly before 1:30 p.m.

Video footage from the scene showed heavy damage to a silver sedan and damage to a black pickup that appeared to have been spun.

Investigators say the sedan was driven by a 23-year-old man heading south on 19th Avenue, who witnesses say weaved through traffic and accelerated through a yellow light when he crashed into the pickup.

The driver of the truck was traveling northbound. He attempted to turn left onto Lower Buckeye when the sedan collided with his vehicle.

The truck driver, identified only as a 75-year-old man, was not injured.

But police said Lara and Josiah, who were in the sedan, did not survive the crash. Three other children were also in the car and were sent to hospital as a precaution to check their injuries.

Police say the impairment is not currently a factor in the crash, but detectives continue to investigate what led to the collision.

Police said none of the children in the sedan were wearing seat belts or in a car seat.

Authorities said they are also still working to determine whether any charges will be filed.
