Prince William recalls emotional childhood memories with Prince Harry at first mention of brother in years

Prince William relives one of the most impactful moments from his youth: a powerful experience he shared with his brother, Prince Harry.

In the Prince of Wales’ upcoming two-part documentary (broadcast October 30 and 31 on ITV in the UK), entitled Prince William: We can end homelessness The Royal offers a unique, in-depth look at its five-year Homewards programme, which aims to demonstrate that homelessness can be eradicated across Britain.

In a newly released clip from the documentary on October 26, William reflects on how his late mother, Princess Dianafirst introduced him to the issue of homelessness by taking him and Harry to The Passage, a British charity that supports people becoming or at risk of becoming homeless.

“My mother took me to The Passage; she took Harry and I both there. I must have been eleven, maybe ten, at the time. I had never been to anything like it before and I was a little worried about what to expect .’ William says in the clip, which is believed to be his first public mention of Harry in years.

He then describes Diana’s natural way to calm everyone’s nerves.

“My mother went about her business in her usual way, making everyone feel relaxed, laughing and joking with everyone,” he says. “I remember thinking at the time, ‘Well, if everyone doesn’t have a home, they’ll all be very sad.’ But it was unbelievable how happy the environment was.”

Looking back on the experience, William says, “I remember having some good conversations, playing chess and chatting, and then it dawned on me that there were other people out there who weren’t living the same lives as you. You know, when you’re quite small, you just think that life is what you see in front of you and you don’t really have the idea to look at anything else It’s when you meet people, like I did then, that put a different perspective in your head and Say, “Well, I was living on the street last night,” and you say, “Woah.” I remember that happening.”

In a 2017 interview with NewsweekHarry also opened up about the experience, saying: “My mother was instrumental in showing me a normal life, including taking me and my brother to live with the homeless. Thank God I’m not completely disconnected from reality. People would be amazed at the ordinary life William and I lead.”

William’s comments come amid ongoing tensions between the brothers. It has been widely reported that tension between Harry and William began afterward in 2016 William expressed his concerns about how quickly Harry was moving in his relationship of Meghan Markle. In 2020, Harry and Meghan announced they were stepping back from their royal roles.

The last time the brothers appeared together was in August at the memorial service of their uncle Lord Robert Fellowes. However, reportedly didn’t get along with each other there.

Sources previously told PEOPLE that Harry’s attempts to contact William — through texts, calls and messages — have been ignored.

The rift with Prince William is “very bad,” a royal insider said, but it is not “irreparable.”
