Grand Rapids 2-year-old shoots himself with gun father thought was out of reach

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – A Grand Rapids family is now under investigation after their 2-year-old shot himself in the hand

According to our conversation with Grand Rapids police, it happened sometime before 10 a.m. Saturday morning.

The parents took the toddler to the hospital with a gunshot wound to the hand.

Fortunately, it appears to be an abrasion, something the child may not suffer from, officers told FOX 17.

According to police, the mother left the room for a moment, heard the shot and came running.

My father told investigators he thought he had put his gun in a place where the 2-year-old couldn’t have gotten it.

Child Protective Services has been notified and the GRPD Detective Unit is working on a warrant to collect evidence at the scene.

This is an ongoing investigation. We will update this article as more information is confirmed.

The investigation mirrors that of 5-year-old Braxton’s April 1 death in Newaygo County, where grandparents, Theresa and Karl Robart, were both charged with violating Michigan’s new gun safety laws.

Karl pleaded guilty earlier this monthTheresa’s trial starts on October 30.
