Jackson County Jr. Livestock organizes livestock shows and auctions

PASCAGOULA, Miss. (WLOX) – One little piggie went to the market and the other little piggies were at the Jackson County Fair!

On Saturday, 38 animals were shown to the public during the Livestock show.

‘This is Brownie. She is the sweetest goat we have on our farm,” said Vivian Dunsworth, 4H livestock club member.

Since May, children in the club have been raising animals as educational projects, to promote agriculture and meat production.

“4H is a great learning opportunity, especially for people who want to teach or learn about animals. I think the livestock club is the perfect club for people who want to learn more about livestock,” said club member Nylah Sullivan.

4H is a national network of youth organizations.

The owner of Dunsfield Heidrun Farms says the livestock club in particular has made a difference to her children’s lives.

“It really changed them. It taught them good sportsmanship and how to be good stewards of animals,” said Ashley Dunsford.

One of the show’s award-winning goats was Russell the Muscle.

“I think he’s one of the best goats ever, and I think I’m a little too attached to him.”

After the show, community members were able to bid on the livestock at a market auction. This was the first market auction to take place in Jackson County since the 1980s.

All money raised should be reinvested into the youth programs and future agricultural projects for the club.

October 27 is the last day of the Jackson County Fair at the Jackson County Fairgrounds.
