Rams reportedly open to trading former All-Pro CB

Rams reportedly open to trading former All-Pro CB

Tre’David White was a key member of the Rams’ secondary early this year, but he has been a good player in each of the past three games. The veteran corner could therefore soon be on the move.

White and the Rams discuss their future, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reports this. A trade is a possible outcome in this case, although the team is also open to keeping him. As Los Angeles knows (as do all other teams), attrition during the season can lead to injuries elsewhere on the CB depth chart. That could return White to the first-team role he held for the first four weeks of the year.

As The Athletic’s Jourdan Rodrigue notesthe Rams indicated in signing White that he would not be given a heavy workload right away, although that eventually happened. The former Bills All-Pro had a 98% defensive share during Weeks 1-4 before dropping out of the gameday lineup altogether. White gave up four touchdowns and a passer rating of 138.4, something that has undoubtedly played a role in his lack of effort over the past three games.

This battle for coverage could hinder White’s trade value, even though the 29-year-old is a pending free agent. He inked one one-year pact on the open market with a base value of $4.25 million. However, there are incentives with that pact as well, and committing to a 60% stake with the Rams would come with additional compensation. Each acquiring team would pick up the remainder of a $1.5 million base salary, something that would be an achievable task for contenders.

White was among the league’s top cornerers during the first five years of his tenure in Buffalo. However, injuries stalled his career and he played just ten games between 2022 and ’23. The LSU product managed to recover from the Achilles strain he suffered last October in time for the start of the season, although his poor coverage will lead to questions about his ability to return to his pre-injury form.

The Rams have Darious Williams back after his IR period, together with Cobie Durant And Ahkello Witherspoon in place at the cornerback spot. Missed time from any member of that trio could lead White back into the lineup, but if a strong enough trade market emerges, it will be interesting to see if the team prefers to move on.
