Chargers scheduled free agent signing during practice before Week 8 vs. Saints

Chargers scheduled free agent signing during practice before Week 8 vs. Saints

The Los Angeles Chargers worked out one player prior to the team’s Week 8 game against the New Orleans Saints.

While fans may be clamoring for the name to be wide receiver help Justin Herbert’s hurting offenseChargers coaches tested a special teams player.

According to Aaron Wilson from KPRC 2, the Chargers hosted punter Jake Gerardi during a practice.

What’s interesting here is that the Chargers don’t seem to have much of a punting problem with current starter JK Scott.

However, Gerardi is a left-footed gambler. The Saints also happen to employ a left-footed punter by the name of Matthew Hayball. Earlier this season, before the Philadelphia Eagles played Hayball and the Saints, they played coincidentally also brought in a left-footed punter for training– effectively giving their special teams unit a look at something they aren’t used to playing against.

So Gerardi could definitely be a contingency plan in the future. It also behooves him to go through these trainings and get word of mouth and film about his abilities. But it feels like the Chargers also used this as a way to prepare for the Saints.
