The Confederation of Africans Football (CAF) yesterday announced its verdict on the hostage saga between Libya and Nigeria, after weeks of investigations and hearings into the incident.

CAF ruled that Libya had breached three codes of ethics and awarded the Super Eagles three points and three goals. It also imposed a $50,000 fine on the Libyan FA, which is expected to be paid within 60 days.

1. The beginning of the saga

The explanation returns to the origins of the saga, namely the “supposedly” dangerous diversion of the Super Eagles’ flight from Benghazi to Al Abraq, after which the players were held hostage for approximately 16 hours without food or water. The incident was believed to have broken fairness rules.

2. Libyan FA rejects CAF ruling

Since the start of the investigation, the Libyan Football Federation has made no secret of its intention to appeal the ruling if it does not go in their favor. It is prepared to possibly escalate the matter to the Court of Arbitration Sport.

3. Search for diplomatic options

The federation also noted that it is prepared to deal with the matter outside its appeal CAFwhich must be submitted within 72 hours, and is willing to explore diplomatic options at international sporting level to address the “great injustice.”

The federation believes that the saga is not only a sporting issue, but also questions Libya’s national dignity and sovereignty. It added that there are calls from the country to fight for the rights of the national team and protect its international value.

CAF has since shared its assessment about the incident in a follow-up press statement. The disciplinary committee ruled in favor of Nigeria, awarding three points and three goals to the Super Eagles and fining Libya $50,000.
