Ranveer Singh’s collapse on set led to cancellation of the Lootera shoot; Director Vikramaditya Motwane reveals

Ranveer Singh’s performance in Lootera grabbed the attention of the audience when the film released in 2013. Although the film wasn’t much of a hit at the box office, many fans loved the chemistry between Singh and his co-star Sonakshi Sinha. In a recent conversation with casting director Mukesh Chhabra for Mashable India, director Vikramaditya Motwane opened up about the challenging production, including a particularly intense moment when Singh collapsed on set.

Motwane recalled how the crew arrived in Dalhousie in March and, after just two days of shooting, Singh injured his back. Despite this, Singh was determined to persevere and insisted that he would be fine. The next day they filmed a critical scene in which his character has to remove a bullet from his waist. Singh wanted to convey his character’s pain authentically, even going so far as to ask how he could truly feel that discomfort while acting.

In an attempt to achieve this, Singh came up with a unique solution. He pinned black paperclips around his waist to simulate the feeling of an injury and then ran up and down mountains, trying to embody the physicality of his wounded character. Motwane admired Singh’s dedication and noted how hard the actor worked to capture the essence of the moment. After filming the scene, Singh finally deleted the clips, but didn’t realize that his intense focus had led to severe back spasms.

The pain overwhelmed him and he eventually collapsed, requiring immediate medical attention. The situation escalated so much that a helicopter was needed to fly him out of Dalhousie the next day, leading to the cancellation of the shooting schedule.

Despite these challenges, Lootera stands out in Singh’s career as a testament to his dedication to acting. His dedication to his craft was commendable, but it also highlighted the physical risks actors sometimes take for their roles.

Vikramaditya Motwane has since progressed in his career and recently directed the thriller CTRL, starring Ananya Panday. The film was released on Netflix on October 4 to positive reviews, showing Motwane’s growth as a filmmaker. Both Singh and Motwane’s experiences serve as powerful reminders of the resilience and dedication required in the film industry, reflecting the highs and lows that come with the creative process.
