Five police officers charged by BNP leader with attempted murder

A case was filed today against five police officers including former Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Lalbagh zone of Criminal Investigation Department (DBs) Moshiur Rahman and Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) Mostafa Kamal for allegedly assaulting and attempting to murder BNP leader and former Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) ward councilor Mir Ashraf Ali Azam.

The three other accused are former ADC of DB’s Kotwali zone Yasir Arafat, Inspector Sher Alam and Sub-Inspector Polash Chowdhury Dipon.

Mir Ashraf Ali Azam filed the complaint in the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Arobia Khanam. After recording the complainant’s statement, the court asked the officer-in-charge of Lalbagh police station to file the case as a first information report (FIR).

According to the court documents, a group of 20/25 police officers raided Azam’s house on July 27, 2023. They stormed the house, broke the folding gate and beat the security guard. The police officers allegedly grabbed Azam in the presence of his wife and son and dragged him out of the room. As Azam resisted, they beat him mercilessly and threw him down the stairs. Azam was seriously injured in the incident as his spine was broken due to the fall.

He was later rushed to hospital, where he received six months of treatment for his broken spine. The complainant said he is still unable to walk normally due to his injuries.
