Ronald Tannur arrested again over girlfriend’s death

Jakarta. Prosecutors re-arrested Gregorius Ronald Tannur on Sunday after the Supreme Court convicted him of aggravated assault that led to the death of his girlfriend Dini Sera Afrianti last year in a case that has gained national attention.

“Ronald Tannur was arrested today at 2:40 pm at a house in Victoria Regency Complex, Surabaya,” Public Prosecution spokesperson Harli Siregar said in a text message. “He is now in the custody of the East Java Public Prosecution Service. followed the Supreme Court’s guilty verdict.”

Ronald was initially acquitted of murder and serious assault by the judges of the court in Surabaya in July. They argued that the woman died from drinking too much alcohol and that Ronald had no malicious intent to kill her, despite video evidence showing Ronald ramming his car into Dini in a Surabaya parking lot.

The panel also ordered prosecutors to immediately release Ronald.

While he was appealing to the Supreme Court, the Public Prosecution Service secretly launched an investigation into the judges.

On October 23, the AGO announced that it had arrested the three judges – Erintuah Damanik, Mangapul and Heru Hanindyo – along with Ronald’s lawyer, Lisa Rahmat, on bribery charges. Searches of their homes in Surabaya, Semarang and Jakarta turned up banknotes worth a total of more than Rp 20 billion ($1.3 million). Prosecutors allege that the judges received bribes from Ronald’s lawyer in exchange for his acquittal.

After these arrests, the Supreme Court overturned the acquittal and sentenced Ronald to five years for aggravated assault, instead of murder.

Two days later, the AGO announced the arrest of a former Supreme Court official, identified as Zarof Ricar, for allegedly taking bribes from the defense team to influence judges in the hope that the acquittal would be upheld during the appeal process.

Zarof, who retired from the Supreme Court in 2022, is accused of taking Rp5 billion from the lawyer, to be divided among the three judges who heard the case and himself.

However, a search of Zarof’s private residence in Jakarta turned up Rp 920 billion ($58.8 million) in cash and 51 kilos of gold bars, which prosecutors linked to his past corrupt behavior while serving at the Supreme Court.

It remains unclear whether prosecutors will pursue corruption charges against Zarof in connection with the cash and gold finds.
