Authorities of Begum Rokeya University in Rangpur have temporarily suspended two teachers and seven officials-employees for their alleged involvement in the killing of Abu Sayeed during the anti-discrimination student movement.

Abu Sayeed, a 12th batch student of the English department, was shot dead by police in front of the university on July 16 during the anti-discrimination student movement.

The university administration also banned all forms of party politics on campus.

“The decisions were taken during the 108th Syndicate Meeting of the University, which was held at the University Administrative Building today,” Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Md. Showkat Ali told reporters at a press conference this afternoon.

Previously, the university administration formed a three-member investigative committee to identify the university’s faculty, students, officials and employees involved in the killing of Abu Sayeed and determine the nature of their punishment.

The inquiry committee submitted the report recently and the syndicate meeting took the decisions after discussing the findings of the report today.

The vice chancellor said: “According to the syndicate’s decision, a case will be filed against all teachers, civil servants, employees and 72 students involved in the killing of Abu Sayeed.”

He said teachers, civil servants and employees cannot be members of any political organization.

“If anyone is still involved, action will be taken against him in light of the University Act,” he added.
