NHL Fines Philadelphia Flyers Forward for Elbowing

Following an elbow incident against the Minnesota Wild, the NHL Department of Player Safety has fined Philadelphia Flyers forward Garnet Hathaway. Hathaway was fined $5,000 for his hit. He was also assessed a two-minute minor penalty for the play.

According to the NHL, the elbow occurred in the second period when Hathaway took a penalty against Joel Eriksson Ek.

Hathaway drew quite a bit of attention from the Wild during their meeting. A scrum broke out late in the third period and Hathaway was the center of attention. Hathaway jumped onto the pile and took Eriksson Ek.

Hathaway locked down Eriksson Ek and landed a few unprotected punches. This exchange was accompanied by the elbow incident and the Wild were not happy with Hathaway’s actions.

Wild forward Marcus Foligno spoke about Hathaway and didn’t hesitate to take a closer look at his abilities.

“It’s what he has to do to stay relevant in this league,” Foligno said.

The Flyers ultimately won the game by a score of 7-5. Hathaway didn’t record a point in the win, but Eriksson Ek did score a goal and an assist.

The 2024-2025 season will be Hathaway’s second season in Philadelphia. He played all 82 games last year and scored seven goals with 10 assists for 17 total points.

A $5,000 fine is the maximum amount allowed under the NHL’s collective bargaining agreement.
