New video appears to show Labor MP repeatedly punching men

A new video has emerged showing Labor MP Mike Amesbury punching a man and then punching him repeatedly after he falls to the ground.

The footage, published by Mail Online, appears to show the MP facing another man before punching him, then continuing to punch him as the man lies on the ground, while others nearby shout “stop with it”.

It comes after a video circulated online on Saturday of him abusing a man lying in the road before a bystander pushed him away.

Cheshire Police confirmed that officers were called at 2.48am to reports of an attack in Frodsham and that “investigations are ongoing”.

Mr Amesbury said he would “cooperate with any queries” after the first images circulated online.

Asked whether the Labor Party was investigating, Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson told Sky News’ Sunday Morning With Trevor Phillips programme: “Mike Amesbury, the MP in question, has gone to police.

“He will cooperate with any investigation they wish to pursue. It is a matter for the police and we want them to do that job.”

In a video shared on social media on Saturday, the MP for Runcorn and Helsby appeared to point his finger at the man on the ground and say: “You’ll never threaten me again, will you?” while someone yells at him off camera.

On Saturday, Amesbury, 55, said: “Last night I was involved in an incident which occurred after I felt threatened in the street after a night out with friends.

“This morning I personally contacted Cheshire Police to report what happened during the incident.

“I will make no further public comment but will of course co-operate with any investigations if required by Cheshire Police.

“I remain fully committed to working hard for the people of Runcorn and Helsby, and am determined to remain an open and accessible MP for our community.”

Earlier on Friday, Mr Amesbury had posted on social media about attending a meeting with local residents about policing and community safety.

In July last year, a 56-year-old man was convicted of stalking the MP at his constituency office in Frodsham, where prosecutors said he stared through the glass and asked security guards about their level of security.

A Labor spokesman said the party was aware of the incident on Saturday and “we understand that (Mr Amesbury) has approached Cheshire Police to self-report what happened this morning and will co-operate with any queries they have.”

Cheshire Police said: “At 2.48am on October 26, police were called to reports of an attack in Frodsham.

“A caller reported being assaulted by a man on Main Street. Investigations are ongoing.”
