Police are looking for a suspect after an on-duty sergeant’s car was damaged in a collision

A Portland Police sergeant is safe, but his police car was significantly damaged after he was rear-ended during a collision in the St. Johns neighborhood Saturday morning.

Police say the sergeant was stopped at a red light at N. Fessenden Street and N. Columbia Way at 9:13 a.m. when the driver of a Ford pickup struck both a Mazda minivan and the police vehicle.

According to police, the driver of the truck stopped briefly and then began to drive away, but realized his car was too damaged to continue driving. He then abandoned his car and fled on foot, police said.

Police searched the area for the suspect, but could not find him. They say there are no major injuries.

The suspect’s vehicle was seized as evidence and due to the severity of the damage, the police vehicle had to be towed. The driver of the van was able to drive away after being questioned by the police.
