Some artists at Bad Boy accused Diddy of giving them unfair recording contracts. One rapper was so fed up that he confronted Diddy during an interview.

Sean “Diddy” Combs founded Bad Boy Records in 1993. He helped found a number of records artists to success, but some came to resent them for their publishing deals. Several artists complained about the unfairness of their contracts. Rapper Mase was so frustrated that he confronted Diddy during a radio interview and asked to terminate his contract. He was shocked when Diddy complied, noting that he rarely saw him do good things.

While Diddy was being interviewed on an Atlanta radio station, Mase arrived unannounced and asked to have his contract terminated. During a break, they stepped away from the microphones, where Diddy signed the document.

“Just be clear (Mase) has the freedom to do whatever he wants to do,” Diddy said when he was back on air, per XXL magazine. “People have felt like maybe our situation has held him back or whatever, he can do whatever he wants. I try to make sure everyone is crystal clear. If you want those Mase verses, get started. But he must have a quick tongue, he’s a mean negotiator, so you better come with that guap.

Mase could hardly believe that everything had gone his way. He wasn’t used to that Diddy is nicewhich may have been why he confronted him on air.

“It took me 10 years to get this paperwork here,” he said. “I had to put this in UPS; I don’t want anything to land on it. I don’t even know what I’m going to release next. Oh my god. I’m doing well…I got my official papers here from Puff Daddy. It was love. So I think in the end we don’t have any problems. I don’t even know how to take that. I’m not used to Puff doing good things.’

Another Bad Boy artist said Sean “Diddy” Combs wasn’t giving artists fair deals

Mase wasn’t the only Bad Boy artist who had a problem with his contract. Rapper Mark Curry claimed that Diddy was the only person at the label making money from music.

“Other than Puff, no one else has thrived outside the label,” Curry wrote in his book Dancing With the Devil: How Puff Burned Hip-Hop’s Bad Boys (via Salon)

Curry believed that Diddy had the Notorious B.I.G in an unfair contract also.

“I was in the same spot as Biggie when he signed with Bad Boy,” Curry wrote. “For example, after Biggie signed the contracts Puff forced on him, he walked away with only $25,000. To keep people from finding out how broke Biggie was when he was killed, Puff announced that he would give the fallen star’s family several million dollars.
