HPD arrests man accused of shooting at police officers in Kalihi

Officers shot the suspect several times. He was transported to hospital in serious condition.

Honolulu police early Sunday arrested a 47-year-old man accused of shooting at officers in Kalihi.

According to Honolulu Police Chief Arthur “Joe” Logan, officers spotted a Honda CRV committing a traffic violation near Aloha Stadium around 1:30 a.m. Officers determined the vehicle had been stolen from Sandy Beach on October 14.

The vehicle was seen heading east on Middle Street in Kalihi turning onto Ahonui Street. Officers stopped the driver near Kuhio Park Terrace.

The driver fled on foot and fired shots at two officers, Logan said. The officers then shot the suspect several times.

The officers involved were from the crime suppression unit, which does not currently have body-worn cameras, Police Chief Joe Logan said at a news conference Sunday. The full video can be viewed on Hawaii News Now. (Screenshot/Hawaii News Now/2024)

The suspect, identified as Blane Apostadiro, was transported to hospital in serious condition. He was arrested on suspicion of first-degree murder of a law enforcement officer, unauthorized control of a motorized vehicle and other offenses, according to an HPD log.

A ghost gun was recovered at the scene.

Police also arrested a 34-year-old female passenger on suspicion of unauthorized entry of a motor vehicle. She has multiple prior convictions, Logan said.

The officers have been placed on administrative leave. No other injuries were reported.

This is the sixth officer-involved shooting on Oahu, compared to three at the same time last year.

The investigation is ongoing.
