A new storm rages over the Philippines after the deadly Trami

MANILA – The Philippines issued a new weather warning on Oct. 28, days when more than 100 people were killed by the year’s worst storm.

Nearly a million people are still sheltering in evacuation centers or with relatives after losing their homes or being displaced by floods caused by Severe tropical storm Tramiwhich struck from October 22.

Now the National Weather Bureau says Tropical Storm Kong-rey will bring heavy rain and strong winds on land in the coming hours, and cause rough seas off the east coast.

Kong-rey will become a typhoon on October 29 and pass small Philippine islands in the north as early as October 30, the weather service said in a bulletin.

The lowest storm alert of five phases applies on the northeast coast of the country.

Trami, on the other hand, hit some of the country’s most densely populated areas.

The government’s disaster agency estimates the death toll from Trami at 116, of which 39 are missing.

“Given the current movement, a further westward shift in the forecast track cannot be ruled out,” it said of the latest storm, which would bring it closer to land than previously forecast.

It expects Kong-rey to slam into Taiwan with typhoon strength in early November.

About 20 major storms and typhoons hit the Philippines or surrounding waters each year, damaging homes and infrastructure and killing dozens of people. AFP
