A great day to be a CMU Maverick & The Fall Classic

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KJCT) – Saturday was a great day for Colorado Mesa Athletics, with many teams putting on dominant showings in conference competition.

The Colorado Mesa Football Team had a successful road trip to Durango, dominating the Fort Lewis Sky Hawks 49-0, and extended their current winning streak to five in a row against the Rocky Mountain Athletics Conference Competition. The victory makes it the first time that CMU has scored five in a row since 2017. CMU’s defense also posted a shutout for the first time since a 42-0 win over Fort Lewis in 2013.

The Mavericks dominated in all three phases of the game, scoring a touchdown on offense, defense and special teams. Offensively, the Mavs’ passing game was very efficient, with quarterback Liu Aumavae completing just under 90% of his throws and two touchdowns. CMU’s rushing attack once again carried much of the load, with three Mavericks rushing for nearly 100 yards. Running Backs Aiden Taylor and Sean Kidd both rushed for exactly 101 and 100. Brandon Belgrave put up 87 yards on the ground, but also found the end zone.

In Grand Junction on the volleyball court, CMU Volleyball also extended their conference winning streak to nine in a row, defeating Colorado College and defeating the Cougars 3-0 (25-20,25-23,25-20).

Later in the evening, CMU fans got an early look at the Mavericks Women’s Basketball Team, which was picked first overall in the RMAC Preseason Coaches Poll. The Mavs hosted an exhibition game against Colorado College. The Mavs won single-handedly, 85-53, and Maverick sophomore guard Mason Rowland got the best from her older sister Kyle Rowland who plays for Colorado College.

At Ball Arena, the Denver Nuggets’ comeback bid against the Los Angeles Clippers fell short, and the Nuggets have now lost consecutive games to open the season. You can find an overview of that match here.

To conclude this week’s Final Whistle, the team breaks up the World Series with the Los Angeles Dodgers taking a 2-0 lead over the New York Yankees. an all-time finish for game one in Los Angeles.
