Lebanon says five people have been killed in an Israeli attack on Tyre’s city centre

Beirut (Lebanon) (AFP) – The Lebanese Health Ministry said Israel struck the southern city of Tire on Monday, killing at least five people and wounding 10 others.

An “Israeli enemy attack this morning on a building” in the center of the coastal city “resulted in a provisional death toll of five dead and 10 injured,” a Health Ministry statement said.

It added that “efforts to remove the debris are underway.”

An AFP video journalist saw emergency workers taking a survivor on a stretcher to an ambulance, while other rescuers worked to extinguish a heavily smoldering fire at the site where a residential apartment building had collapsed like a pancake.

Tyre, an ancient coastal city that is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, was subjected to heavy Israeli attacks last week, leaving parts of the center in ruins.

Israel last month escalated airstrikes on Hezbollah strongholds and sent ground troops to Lebanon, after a year of cross-border firefights with the Iran-backed group over the war in Gaza.
