Car crashes into Derwent Valley house at high speed

A driver is lucky to be alive after his car crashed into a house near New Norfolk.

Anne-Marie Cate, who owns the Lyell Highway property near the highway, said the car appeared to be traveling at about 60mph when it crashed into her house on Wednesday evening.

“There’s quite a bit of damage to the fencing,” she said.

“In the bedroom he knocked things off the walls and moved the cupboard 5-10 cm.”

Significant damage was reported to the property’s fence

Cate and her husband operate an outdoor tattoo studio and planned to host an open house the day after the crash.

“(We) got wheeled in tonight. Tomorrow I will still be open for the Open Day. We just need to clean up a bit,” she told customers.

CCTV footage captured the moment the car drove into the house

“We’re all doing well and you might see the new decoration in the garden of my studio when you get here, so please enjoy the view.”

The car, belonging to a 56-year-old man from Moonah, is said to have failed to negotiate a bend before crashing through the house’s gate and coming to rest against a wall.

The driver of the vehicle was taken to Royal Hobart Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

“The cause of the crash remains under investigation and no charges have been laid at this time,” a Tasmania Police spokesperson told Pulse on Monday.
