Latest US elections: comedian under fire after Trump rally as presidential candidates head to key swing states | American news

A comedian has come under fire for making an offensive joke about Puerto Rico and Latin Americans during Donald Trump’s rally in New York tonight.

Tony Hinchcliffe described Puerto Rico on stage as a “floating island of garbage”.

“I don’t know if you know this, but there’s literally a floating trash island in the middle of the ocean right now,” he said.

“I think it’s called Puerto Rico.”

There was a loud ‘ooh’ in the crowd, which seemed to drown out the laughter.

He also said he welcomes migrants to the US “with open arms” – before adding “and by open arms I mean like this…” and moving his arms in front of him as if to say “no”.

“These Latinos love to make babies too, just know that,” he also said.

“There is no retreat, they are not doing that, they are coming in, just like they did to our country.”

Trump is regularly criticized for his rhetoric on migrants and has said he will carry out the largest deportation in American history if he wins the election.

‘Know that’s how they feel about you’

Democrat Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who is of Puerto Rican descent and was born in New York, responded to the comments during a livestream with Kamala Harris’ running mate Tim Walz.

“If you got some asshole calling Puerto Rico ‘floating trash,’ just know that’s how they feel about you,” she said.

“It’s what they think about everyone who makes less money than them.”
