Fire structure

Five tenants were displaced by a fire at a building at 854 First St. E on Sunday morning.

Cornwall Fire Services reported Monday afternoon that firefighters arrived at the address, which is home to four apartments and A&F Billiards, just after 8:30 a.m. and found heavy smoke coming from the building. A total of thirteen firefighters responded to the scene and were able to contain the fire to a small part of the building, although there was heavy smoke damage requiring all tenants to leave until the damage could be repaired.

No injuries were reported and the Canadian Red Cross has been contacted to assist the displaced tenants until they can return home.

While the investigation into the cause of the fire continues, the Cornwall Fire Brigade said several smoke and carbon monoxide alarms were missing inside – prompting a reminder that landlords are legally responsible for installing the alarms, and tenants are responsible for keeping their Notify landlords if the alarms have problems.

Cornwall Fire Brigade will be in the area on Saturday to provide public information on fire prevention as part of the After the Fire programme.
