Lawrence police are investigating a shooting downtown early Sunday

LAWRENCE, Kan. (WIBW) – Lawrence police investigated a shooting reported early Sunday in the city’s downtown area.

According to a Facebook post from Lawrence police, the shooting was reported around 2:30 a.m. Sunday near 8th and New Hampshire streets. The location was about a block east of Massachusetts Street, the city’s main thoroughfare.

Officials said people called police and said they heard fighting and a gunshot.

Officers found the victim with a gunshot wound to the leg.

Meanwhile, police were able to speak with the victim Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical Medics treated him before he was taken to the hospital, officials said.

The victim’s injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

The attackers fled the area and investigators were called to the scene, officials said.

The investigation continues.
